Permalloy Classification and Properties

Permalloy can be classified according to the ratio of nickel to iron it contains: 35% to 40% Ni-Fe alloy, 45% to 50% Ni-Fe alloy, 50% to 65% Ni-Fe alloy, and finally, 70% to 81% Ni-Fe alloy. Regardless of the specific classification, Permalloy can be fabricated into circular magnetic flux lines, rectangular magnetic hysteresis loops, or flat shapes. As the content of nickel and iron varies, the magnetic properties of Permalloy within these ranges also differ; among them, the last category exhibits the strongest magnetism.
By adding trace amounts of molybdenum and chromium to the alloy composition within this range, in specific proportions, and then employing a high-temperature melting process, the resulting multiphase alloy—known as Permalloy—will exhibit significantly enhanced magnetic permeability and a low β value.
The excellent dynamic characteristics of permalloy make it well-suited for fabricating certain specialized magnetic modulators that can operate stably for extended periods at frequencies below 400 Hz.
