The characteristics of permalloy and the differences between it and pig iron.

A simple way to distinguish between permalloy and pig iron is to use a magnetometer to measure their magnetic permeability. Generally, the magnetic permeability of permalloy exceeds 100,000, whereas that of pig iron is less than 20,000. The alloy is melted in a vacuum induction furnace and then subjected to hot and cold plastic deformation to produce cold-rolled strips, cold-drawn wires, or hot-rolled (forged) plates and bars. It is used in the manufacture of audio transformers, current transformers, magnetic amplifiers, magnetic modulators, chokes, and audio magnetic heads. Permalloy exhibits excellent soft-magnetic properties: its initial permeability μi ranges from 36.5 d to 135 mH/m; its maximum permeability μm can reach from 125 to 375 mH/m; its coercive force is 0.8 A/m; and its resistivity ρ is between 60 and 85.
